The painting is from an old Lexington, VA home. The Painting with frame is 13 1/2" x 16". The inside frame is 10 1/2 x 13". The top of the paper on back is stamped Confederate Memorial Literary Society and is dated April 21, 1927. Hand-written on the paper is: Dear Mr Silvette, After a scrutinizing examination of General R. E. Lee portrait painted as a gift to the Confederate Museum, it gives me pleasure to provenance the portrait a striking likeness of the great and good General Lee, and [illegible] respect perfect. Respectfully yours, Giles B Cooke The last surviving member of General R. E. Lee's staff Below that is a R E Lee Signature that we have no way to authenticate. And do NOT claim it to be real.
